Privacy Policy

Effective date:

The LIT Bible is built on a simple principle: your reading life is your own. This policy describes what data the LIT Bible website (litbible.net) and iOS app collect and how.

Scope

This policy applies to both the LIT Bible website at litbible.net and the LIT Bible iOS app. Where a section applies only to one or the other, it is labeled accordingly.

What we collect

Website: The only personal information we collect is your email address, and only if you choose to subscribe to our mailing list. We use Brevo to manage our mailing list. Your email address is stored with Brevo and used solely to send you LIT Bible updates. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email we send.

We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand how the site is used. Cloudflare Web Analytics is privacy-preserving by design: it does not use cookies, does not track individuals across sites or sessions, and does not build behavioral profiles. The data it collects — such as page view counts and general geographic region — is aggregated and cannot be used to identify you. Cloudflare, our hosting provider, may also log basic request data (such as IP addresses) at the network level for security and performance purposes. All Cloudflare data handling is subject to Cloudflare's privacy policy.

App: The app does not collect your name, email address, device identifiers, or any information that could identify you as an individual.

What stays on your device (app)

Everything you create in the app — highlights, notes, and your reading position — is stored locally on your device using a private database. This data never leaves your device and is not accessible to us.

Your app preferences (such as your chosen text size and whether you have completed the welcome tour) are stored in your device's standard preferences storage and remain on your device.

Content updates (app)

The app may periodically check our servers at litbible.net for updates to the Bible translation text. During this check, your device contacts our server and downloads any changed content. No information about you, your device, or your reading activity is sent to us during this process. The check is limited to comparing file versions and downloading updated text — nothing more.

Spotlight Search (app)

The app makes portions of the Bible text available through your device's built-in Spotlight search. This indexing happens entirely on your device and is not transmitted to us or to Apple.

The home screen widget (app)

The LIT Bible widget displays lectionary readings and liturgical calendar information. All widget data is computed on your device from information bundled with the app. The widget makes no network requests.

The website and app include links to external services. When you follow these links, you are subject to those third parties' own privacy policies. We do not track whether you visit these pages or take any action on them.

External services we link to include:

  • Donorbox — for contributions to the LIT Bible and the Liberating Scripture Collective
  • Apple Podcasts — for the Found in Translation podcast
  • Spotify — for the Found in Translation podcast
  • YouTube — for the Found in Translation podcast
  • CreativeCommons.org — to display the full license text
  • liberatingscripture.org — the Liberating Scripture Collective's website

Sharing (app)

When you select text and choose Share, your device's standard share sheet opens. The selected passage text is passed to whatever app you choose to share it with. We do not log what you share, where you share it, or how often.

Third-party software (app)

The app is built using two third-party software libraries:

  • GRDB — an open-source database library. It stores your data locally on your device and makes no network connections of its own.
  • Supabase SDK — a library that supports optional cloud backup features. This feature is not active in the current version of the app. The library is included in preparation for a future update; it makes no network connections and does not collect any data in the current version.

Children

The LIT Bible website and app do not collect personal information from anyone, including children. The site and app contain no advertising and no social features. The only personal data collected — email addresses for the newsletter — requires active opt-in and is never required to access any content.

Changes to this policy

If we update this policy in a way that is material to how your data is handled, we will note it in the app's Translation Updates section and on the website, and update the effective date above.
