Privacy Policy

Effective date:

The LIT Bible is built on a simple principle: your reading life is your own. This policy describes what data the LIT Bible website (litbible.net) and iOS app collect and how.

Scope

This policy applies to both the LIT Bible website at litbible.net and the LIT Bible iOS app. Where a section applies only to one or the other, it is labeled accordingly.

What we collect

Website: The only personal information collected is your email address, and only if you choose to subscribe to the mailing list. Brevo manages the mailing list, storing email addresses solely to send LIT Bible updates. Users can unsubscribe anytime using links in emails.

The site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, which is privacy-preserving by design: "it does not use cookies, does not track individuals across sites or sessions, and does not build behavioral profiles." Aggregated data like page views and general geographic region cannot identify individuals. Cloudflare, the hosting provider, may log basic request data at the network level for security and performance, subject to Cloudflare's privacy policy.

App: The app does not collect your name, email address, device identifiers, or identifying information.

Your reading data (app)

Everything you create in the app — highlights, notes, and your reading position — is stored in a private database on your device. The LIT Bible team cannot access this data.

If you have iCloud enabled for LIT Bible, this data is also synced to your personal iCloud account via Apple's CloudKit. Sync happens automatically in the background, the same way Apple Notes and Reminders work. Your data is stored in your own private iCloud database; the LIT Bible team has no access to it there either.

You can turn off iCloud sync for LIT Bible at any time in iOS Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Apps Using iCloud.

App preferences like text size and display settings are stored in your device's standard preferences storage and are not synced to iCloud.

Content updates (app)

The app periodically checks litbible.net servers for Bible translation text updates. During this check, your device downloads changed content with no information about you, your device, or reading activity transmitted to the servers. The process compares file versions and downloads updated text only.

The home screen widget (app)

The LIT Bible widget displays lectionary readings and liturgical calendar information. All widget data is computed on your device from information bundled with the app. The widget makes no network requests.

The website and app include links to external services. Following these links subjects you to those third parties' privacy policies. The LIT Bible team does not track whether you visit these pages or take actions on them.

External services linked include:

  • Give Lively — for contributions to the LIT Bible and the Liberating Scripture Collective
  • Apple Podcasts — for the Found in Translation podcast
  • Spotify — for the Found in Translation podcast
  • YouTube — for the Found in Translation podcast
  • CreativeCommons.org — to display the full license text
  • liberatingscripture.org — the Liberating Scripture Collective's website

Sharing (app)

When you select text and choose Share, your device's standard share sheet opens. The selected passage text is passed to whatever app you choose to share it with. The LIT Bible team does not log what you share, where you share it, or frequency.

Third-party software (app)

The app uses one third-party software library:

  • GRDB — an open-source database library that stores scripture content locally on your device. It makes no network connections of its own.

iCloud sync uses Apple's CloudKit framework, which is part of the iOS operating system and subject to Apple's privacy policy.

Children

The LIT Bible website and app do not collect personal information from anyone, including children. The site and app contain no advertising and no social features. The only personal data collected — email addresses for the newsletter — requires active opt-in and is never required to access content.

Changes to this policy

If the policy updates in ways materially affecting data handling, the LIT Bible team will note it in the app's Translation Updates section and on the website, updating the effective date above.

Questions about this policy can be directed to the LIT Bible team at litbible.net/contact.
