Romans 16

1 Now, I introduce to you our sister Phoebe, who is a servant of the assembly in Cenchrea, 2 so that you can welcome her in connection with the Lord appropriately for those designated for sacred purposes and provide her with whatever action she may need of you since she has come to be a leadera of many including me.

3 Greet Priscab and Aquilla, my collaborators in connection with Christ Jesus, 4 who risked their own necks for my very life. Not only I but also all the assemblies of the other people groups give thanks forc them. 5 Also, greet the assembly based in their house. Greet my beloved Epenetus, who is the first-fruit offering to Christ from Asia.d 6 Greet Miriam, who has worked to exhaustion for you. 7 Greet Andronicus and Junia,e my fellow Jewsf and my fellow prisoners. They are famous amongg the emissaries,h and they came to be connected with Christ before me. 8 Greet my beloved Ampliatus in connection with the Lord. 9 Greet Urbanus, our collaborator in connection with Christ, and my beloved Stachys. 10 Greet Apelles, who is genuinely valuable in connection with Christ. Greet those from the household of Aristobulus. 11 Greet my fellow Jew,i Herodion. Greet those from the household of Narcissus who are connected with the Lord. 12 Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa who work hard in connection with the Lord. Greet the beloved Persis, who has worked to exhaustion in connection with the Lord. 13 Greet Rufus, who is chosen in connection withj the Lord, and his and my motherk 14 Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas, and the members of the Family who are there with them. 15 Greet Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all those who are designated for sacred purposes there with them. 16 Greet each other with a sacred kiss. All the assemblies of Christ greet you.

17 Family, I encourage you to watch those who create divisions and traps alongside the teaching which you learned; turn away from them. 18 People like these do not serve our Lord Christ but rather their own appetites, and through their smooth talk and flattery, they trick the hearts of those who are not aware of harm. 19 Word of your commitment to listening to what you learned has reached everyone, so I celebrate over you, but I want you to be wise regarding what is beneficial and to be uncontaminated regarding what is harmful. 20 The God of peace will quickly crush the Adversarial Onel under your feet. May the generosity of our Lord Jesus be with you.

21 Timothy, my collaborator, greets you, and so do Lucius, Jason, and Sosipater, my fellow Jews. 22 I, Terius, who am transcribing this letter, greet you in connection with the Lord. 23 Gaius, host to me and the whole assembly, greets you. Erastus, the steward of the city, and our brother Quartus greet you.

25 m To the one who is able to make you secure based on my triumphant message and heralding of Jesus Christ, based on uncovering the mystery that has been concealed for long ages 26 but is now brought to lightn and being made known to all people groups through the prophetic writingso by the order of the agelong God resulting in them listening with trusting faithfulness, 27 to the one wise God through Jesus Christ be praise throughout the ages. Amen.

a Or ‘champion’ or ‘protector’ or ‘ruler’ or ‘director’ or ‘patron.’ Traditionally, ‘helper’ which could be true in the sense of being a champion, protector, or patron, but it is certainly not intended as a subordinate role but rather as someone who uses their greater power, influence, authority, resources, or strength to support those who have less power, resources, influence, authority, or strength. It is notable that Paul includes himself in one with less than her in this sense.

b This is the same woman referred to in Acts as Priscilla. They are different forms of the same name. It is worth noting that her name appears before Aquilla’s. By cultural convention, the person of higher importance, status, or rank was always listed first. Additionally, in married couples—which they are—the husband was always listed first. Prisca’s name appearing first indicates that she was the more prominent member of the sacred Family, overriding convention so that her name appears before her husband’s name.

d This is referring to the Roman province of Asia—sometimes called ‘Asia Minor’—not the modern continent of Asia. The province of Asia was approximately located where present-day Türkiye is.

e For much of history, Iounian was translated as ‘Junius’ instead of ‘Junia’ based on the assumption that it could not be referring to a woman here since this person is named as an apostle. However, no such name as Junius existed in the Roman world while Junia is known to have been used as a woman’s name, and the form of the word here is feminine, not masculine.

f Or ‘compatriots’ or ‘relatives.’ The word means someone with a shared lineage or heritage, someone from the same people group.

g How to translate this preposition, en, is the subject of debate. After scholarship broadly accepted that Iounian was a woman’s name and should be translated as Junia (see footnote above), scholars began to change from translating it as 'among’ to translating it as ‘to.’ Therefore, it would indicate that Junia was someone that the apostles knew well, rather than that she was well known as being an apostle. While it is not impossible to translate it as ‘to’ it would be more unusual to use that here. The more common preposition to use would be eis or possibly even pros. The fact that people did not translate it as ‘to’ until that change was needed to preserve an all-male apostleship makes the change highly suspect, and the most straightforward translation remains ‘among.’

This translator chose ‘Adversarial One’ in this instance to emphasize the contrast with ‘God of peace,’ which is not about peace in the sense of tranquility or quiet serenity but rather about peace in the sense of harmony and unity between people.

m There is no verse 24. Verses 25-27 contain a doxology that appears in nearly all, but not universally all, manuscripts; however, it appears in different places in different manuscripts, sometimes here and sometimes in chapter 14 or 15. Various theories exist about the history of how those discrepancies developed.
